A LETTER FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE

MON · NOV 2 · 2026

Decisions are being made about your block. You should know.

The Eagles lost their sixth straight, skill games are being pulled out of corner stores, and Tuesday is Election Day.

AROUND

The Eagles lost again Sunday night, 27-10 at Washington, their sixth straight, and they're 2-6. Tanner McKee made just his fifth career start with Jalen Hurts out, and the defense has 10 sacks through eight games, 31st in the league. The trade deadline is a little over a week away. The people are already swapping stories about the lean years of the 90s.

Skill games are coming out of the corner stores. The state Supreme Court ruled in June that they're slot machines, lawmakers' 120 days to act ran out October 13, and state police started enforcing it the next day. Tariq Khan's 7-Eleven on Snyder Avenue lost its machine October 16 and he says foot traffic and sales have dropped. No replacement law has passed, and the proposals run from a 16 percent tax to Gov. Shapiro's 52 percent.

Philadelphia's left says it wants a City Council majority in 2027. Four members vote as a bloc now: Kendra Brooks, Nicolas O'Rourke, Rue Landau and Jamie Gauthier, so the math is keeping those four and winning five more for nine of 17 seats. "We are ready to win governing power in 2027," said Seth Anderson-Oberman, the former head of Reclaim Philadelphia, who is expected to run in the 8th District. Philly developers are planning a $1.5 million campaign to protect incumbents. The people in the thread are split between cheering it on and doubting the ward leaders will let it happen.

Police say about 12,000 cars have been stolen in Philadelphia this year and roughly a quarter of them were Hondas. Thieves use the diagnostic port to reprogram a newer Accord or CR-V to work with other keys, and Capt. Robert McKeever recommends a port cover, which Honda dealers sell, plus a steering wheel club.

Patrick Stewart died last Wednesday at 86, and Philly has been rewatching his 2019 sketch with Gritty on The Late Show. In it the two claim to be old friends from the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Stewart accuses Gritty of violating the Prime Directive.

UP

Tyrese Maxey scored a season-high 38 Saturday night, his seventh straight 25-point game, and the Sixers beat the Hornets 109-104 in Charlotte without Joel Embiid or LeBron James. They're 6-1.

Two best friends are driving toy cars from Independence Hall to Niagara Falls. Cassie Aran and her friend are going about 700 miles at roughly 2 mph for a Guinness record, about two months in all, and they've raised more than $8,000 for To Write Love on Her Arms.

On this day in 1999, Philadelphia elected John F. Street mayor. He beat Republican Sam Katz by fewer than 7,500 votes and became the city's second Black mayor.

See you tomorrow.
